Mi primer contacto con el inglés fue en 1997, cuando recibí algunas clases en segundo de primaria. Recuerdo una actividad en la que debía decir "I am Maria ", pero por error dije "I am a banana". Sin embargo, no recuerdo mucho más de esas clases, excepto que odiaba que me hicieran hacer planas una y otra vez.

A los 13 años, mi mamá me inscribió en un curso en ICO en Puebla, donde usaban el libro "Goal". Este curso fue fundamental para aprender inglés, y aunque solo alcancé el nivel básico, fue una experiencia muy valiosa. Estudiaba 1:30 horas diarias y al final me quedé con la maestra para mí sola porque todos mis compañeros dejaron de ir. No sé por qué, ya que era una buena maestra y el curso no era caro. La maestra se llamaba Socorro.

En 2004, sin darme cuenta, hice input comprensivo viendo la serie "Las aventuras de Jackie Chan" en inglés durante 3 meses. En ICO tenían una plataforma para practicar el idioma, probablemente una de las primeras en existir en ese año. La maestra usaba mucho "La Mansión del Inglés" para practicar el idioma con ejercicios. Me gustaba que en ICO también organizaban semanas culturales con muchas actividades, y como solo estudiaba la secundaria, casi iba a todas las actividades extras además de mis clases regulares.

Mi tercer acercamiento al inglés fue en la universidad en 2011, donde estudié durante 7 semestres (que en realidad eran cuatrimestres) y adquirí la mayor parte del idioma de 2011 a 2015. Estudié en Ciudad de México en el Centro Universitario Incarnate Word. En la universidad, se veían las 4 habilidades del idioma: grammar, listening, speaking y reading, pero era más reading and grammar que listening y speaking. Los profesores estaban muy bien preparados, pero eran grupos grandes con compañeros no muy interesados en aprender el idioma. Creo que con otro sistema hubiera aprendido mejor. En esta escuela utilizaban los libros de National Geographic y después los cambiaron por los de "American Headway".

Con la maestra Karla H. Celis, noté más diferencia en mi avance. También tomé un curso de inglés conversacional durante unos 3 meses, pero después dejó de gustarme porque pasaba más tiempo escuchando a mis compañeros que hablaban peor inglés que yo. Las correcciones de los profesores eran mínimas, aunque los profesores eran buenos y estaban bien preparados. Algunos eran nativos, pero no los escuchaba a ellos.

Luego me inscribí en ICATMI a un curso de inglés con la maestra Celina, quien también era muy buena maestra. Sin embargo, el sistema se basaba más en grammar and reading y muy poco en speaking and listening.

En 2023, estuve en Nueva Zelanda durante tres meses, desde mayo hasta agosto. Fue una experiencia en la que pude practicar mucho inglés. Sin embargo, al principio hablaba más, pero durante los últimos dos meses casi no hablé con nativos. Convivía con unas personas que hablaban bien inglés, pero su idioma natal era tagalog, así que no practicaba mucho con ellas.

Actualmente, llevo casi 2 años haciendo intercambio de idioma con un nativo que vive en Serbia, 30 minutos en español y 30 minutos en inglés. También uso Tandem ocasionalmente cuando hay fiestas interesantes donde sí hablan buen inglés. Aunque no he realizado ningún examen de certificación de inglés, las pruebas en internet de los últimos días me colocan en un nivel C1, aunque con resultados variables que van desde B1+ hasta C2. Creo que mis puntos débiles son el speaking y la gramática, mientras que el reading y listening son mis puntos más fuertes. He complementado mi aprendizaje del inglés con actividades como volver a hacer input comprensivo con la película "El Fantasma de la Ópera" en 2013, leer varios mangas en inglés en zinmanga, leer información en sitios web de temas que me interesan en inglés, y ver dramas asiáticos y leer los subtítulos en inglés. Sin embargo, he notado que no debo hacer esto último para aprender inglés.

At ICO, they had a platform to practice the language, probably one of the first to exist that year. The teacher used "La Mansión del Inglés" a lot for language practice with exercises. I liked that at ICO they also organized cultural weeks with many activities, and since I was only in secondary school, I went to almost all the extra activities besides my regular classes.

My third encounter with English was in university in 2011, where I studied for 7 semesters (which were actually trimesters) and acquired most of the language from 2011 to 2015. I studied in Mexico City at the Centro Universitario Incarnate Word. In university, all four language skills were covered: grammar, listening, speaking, and reading, but it was more focused on reading and grammar than listening and speaking. The teachers were very well prepared, but they taught large groups with classmates who were not very interested in learning the language. I think with another system, I would have learned better. In this school, they used National Geographic books and later changed to "American Headway."

With teacher Karla H. Celis, I noticed more difference in my progress. I also took a conversational English course for about 3 months, but then I stopped liking it because I spent more time listening to my classmates who spoke worse English than me. The teachers' corrections were minimal, although the teachers were good and well-prepared. Some were natives, but I didn't listen to them.

Then I enrolled in ICATMI for an English course with teacher Celina, who was also a very good teacher. However, the system was more based on grammar and reading and very little on speaking and listening.

In 2023, I was in New Zealand for three months, from May to August. It was an experience where I was able to practice a lot of English. However, at the beginning, I spoke more, but during the last two months, I hardly spoke with natives. I lived with people who spoke good English, but their native language was Tagalog, so I didn't practice much with them.

Currently, I have been doing a language exchange with a native who lives in Serbia for almost 2 years, 30 minutes in Spanish and 30 minutes in English. I also occasionally use Tandem when there are interesting parties where they do speak good English. Although I have not taken any English certification exams, the online tests in the last few days place me at a C1 level, although with variable results ranging from B1+ to C2. I think my weak points are speaking and grammar, while reading and listening are my strongest points. I have supplemented my English learning with activities such as doing extensive input again with the movie "The Phantom of the Opera" in 2013, reading several English manga on zinmanga, reading information on websites about topics that interest me in English, and watching Asian dramas and reading the English subtitles. However, I have noticed that I should not do this last practice to learn English.
